Connecticut Students For A Dream Host Mock Graduation After Legislature Tables Aid Bill
Undocumented students had diplomas snatched out of their hands Wednesday during a mock graduation ceremony, representing the legislature's failure to pass a bill that would have granted students financial aid regardless of their immigration status.
The mock ceremony on the front steps of the Capitol featured eight undocumented students clad in shiny blue caps and gowns. Minutes after 'graduates' were handed their diplomas, a man, acting the role of a state senator, swooped in and grabbed them from their hands.
The symbolic ceremony was a message to legislators who tabled a bill on Friday that would have given undocumented students access to student-generated financial aid. The aid would have come from fees all students pay to universities as part of their tuition.
